Our best prayers go out to Nitro Mike Whittington as he has undergone heart surgery Tuesday, October 30th. Nitro Mike is a strong guy so we are sure he will be ok – but we miss having him around the shop lately!
One of Nitro’s favorite seasons is Halloween – so we are very happy you pulled through surgery with no complications!
Update 10.25.7
Nitro pulled through ok for the first phase… Nitro will undergo open heart surgery on Tuesday for a triple bypass.
Update 10.30.7
Nitro pulled through open heart surgery today. He was scheduled for a triple bypass but ended up having a quadruple bypass. Nitro is recovering well. Nitro will be in the hospital for about a week.
Update 11.3.7
Spoke to Nitro tonight. Spirits were up and up, but sounded tired. He enjoys reading his blog here on SCH’s website so keep the notes coming! Nitro gets out on Monday.
Update 11.16.7
Nitro called today to give an update. Nitro had to go back into the hospital last Tuesday due to some complications. They had to open him up again and fix a few things. Nitro feels a lot better now and hopes to get out of the hospital on Monday. He is in good spirits and sounds much better! Nitro has made a goal to make an appearance at the Brushless Nats on December 1st! We are all pulling for ya Nitro!
Update 11.25.7
Spoke to Nitro again tonight. What a difference. He sounds energized and great! Good to hear that Nitro is back on his feet! Nitro still has a challenging road ahead as his lifestyle has completely changed – healthy choices from here on out! Nitro lost about 40 pounds and is on the road to recovery. Keep up the good work Nitro!
Today started out like any other race day… people arriving early anxiously waiting to get into the shop so they could start wrenching on their R/C cars… it was when Duquesne Light informed SCH management that the power must be shut down at noontime for a period of 3 to 8 hours! OH NOOOOO said the staff! Owner Mike Rooney personally talked with the power people and was able to get the power shut-down held off till 2:00 PM. With a vote from the body of racers, SCH has postponed the SCH Brushless Nationals until further notice. We were able to salvage some racing however. We turned the day into a club racing day with two qualifiers and one main. The last race finished at 2:15 on the nose – and the power was out at 2:16! Racers have the option of running at SCH on Sunday for no charge.
The day started off with partial power. “We made do with what we had…” says owner Michael Rooney.
2:16 PM the lights were out with the exception of emergency lighting and sunlight! It was enough to pack up gear and to get on with the day.
Many racers came from hours away! Thank you to all such as Ozzy (RIP Motorsports) and Mike O for the continued support! Keep posted for the re-scheduling of the Steel City Brushless Nationals! Sorry for any inconveniences! I think we all had fun despite what happened, which was beyond our control!
Saturday, December 1, 2007 was the make up date for the 1st attempt back around Halloween. Some say this race should have been a Christmas Theme instead of Halloween. The day started when the doors opened early – before 8:00am.
Tony Palmerine was the Race Director for the Nationals this year. A job done well!
